PEFC & FSCCompass Forest Products Ltd achieved environmental chain-of-custody certification for both PEFC and FSC in 2004, prior to which we subscribed to the Timber Trade Federation's Environmental Purchasing Policy. The vast majority of the timber we supply comes from the Northern European temperate softwood forests of Finland, Sweden and Norway. Forestry is a vital element of the economies of each of the three countries, and the forest products sector provides a livelihood for a significant part of their populations. As one of the major natural resources in Northern Scandinavia, the preservation of the forest for future generations has long been a defining feature of the sawmilling industry. The Scandinavian countries where our sawmills are situated have for many years been at the forefront of environmental responsibility, and to this day their forestry management practises are amongst the best in the world. Compass Forest Products has developed an environmental purchasing policy, which commits the company to ensure that all our timber is purchased from legal sources. We are further committed not to source any timber species prohibited under Appendix 1 of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). We have the highest confidence in the sawmills that produce our timber and in the forest sources from which the wood fibre is derived. The company fully supports the independent 3rd party audited chain-of-custody certification of forestry, and recognises this as the best wy of demonstrating good environmental management. Our principal sawmills in Finland, Sweden and Norway were amongst the first in their respective countries to achieve environmental accreditation under the PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) Scheme, the largest such scheme in Europe. Timber certified under this scheme accounts for in excess of 90% of the goods distributed by Compass Forest Products. We also have a sawmill in our portfolio accredited to supply FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified timber. The company took an active role in promoting our sawmills to apply for, and subsequently to achieve, environmental certification. Since we gained certification for Compass Forest Products under both schemes, the environmental chain-of-custody is complete from forest source, through the sawmills as primary processors and ourselves as distributors, right up top the point of delivery. As virtually all of the timber we supply is chain-of-custody certified we are in a very strong position to assure our customers that the wood they buy comes with the highest environmental pedigree.
