Heartfree & Greensplit
Most of the larger dimensions we supply, such as 100x100 mm, 90x90 mm and 75x75 mm destined for use by the wood-turning industries, are Heart-Free and Green-Split.
Sawn from the largest diameter logs, a 25 mm wide section of the heartwood is removed, along with the outer schaalboards and side-boards. The remaining square sections of timber thus have a more uniform composition and grain. They are much more stable when kiln-dried under the particular and specialised drying regime for large cross-sections, and the risk of splits or shakes developing in the timber is greatly reduced.
Our heart-free and green-split timber produced this way is especially suitable for the production of turned components. The more uniform composition of the timber piece with the heartwood removed means the wood turns well on a lathe. As an additional benefit, the grain pattern, or "figure", of timber cut this way enhances the natural beauty of the wood displayed in finished turned products.
