Efficient wood processing

Did You Know?

Timber and its derivatives are the only true renewable resource in use in building practices today.

The timber production process consumes far less energy

During it's conversion from sawlog to finished product the timber production process is by far, more eco sustainable than any other building material in use today. Even better, a tree locks up on average 1 tonne of CO² and produces 727 Kg of oxygen for every cubic metre of growth, helping to maintain the carbon balance.

A cubic metre of logs goes a long way.

As an industry, timber production is also extremely efficient in the utilisation of raw material. A typical cubic metre (m³) of logs - 1.12 m³ over bark - delivered to a sawmill from the forest produces the following:

  • 0.12 m³ of bark, commonly used as biofuel, or mulch/decorative ground cover
  • 0.34 m³ of chips, which can also be used as biofuel, to make paper or fibreboard
  • 0.07 m³ of sawdust, used for fibreboard, particleboard, wood pellets (biofuel) or low-grade paper
  • 0.59 m³ of sawn lumber, which if kiln dried will result in -
    0.47 m³ of dry-finished sawnwood
0.03 m³ of volume loss due to shrinkage
0.09 m³ in planer shavings, used for the same purposes as sawdust, and often as animal bedding.

Very little is wasted in this highly efficient process!

Building with wood is good.

The use of wood for building purposes and new tree growth in forests reduce the CO² concentrations in the atmosphere and thus counteracts the pressure on the climate. Trees in forest bind CO² from the air and via photosynthesis, store carbon until the wood from the tree degrades biologically or is burned up.

Products and buildings made of wood store CO²

for long periods of time and function in this way as effective storage depots for greenhouse gases.

And finally.

Timber products are very easy to repair, re-use and recycle. We are confident that softwood is one of the most environmentally friendly products used anywhere, and the responsible forestry management of our Nordic sawmills will ensure the continued availability of this vital natural resource for many generations to come.
